An armchair made by Kovona, the national enterprise that continued pre-war tubular furniture production after nationalisation. The combination of a steel frame with beech armrests is typical of this kind of seating — the tube does the carrying, the wood stays where you rest your arms. Restored as an original, with new upholstery. A single armchair for a study or a reading corner.
The successor of the Slezák works in metal furniture
Kovona emerged after nationalisation from the factory of Robert Slezák in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, which had been among Europe's largest makers of metal furniture since 1908 and which made its name in tubular steel in the 1930s.
After 1948 it continued the same craft under a new name: chrome-plated tubular structures, wooden armrests and upholstery, furniture for homes as well as public interiors. What remained from the pre-war production were the structural principles that keep these pieces in condition decades later.
Since 1992 the company has traded as Kovonax and still makes metal furniture in Bystřice pod Hostýnem.
