A large writing desk made by Kovona: a wooden body carried by a chrome-plated tubular structure, exactly the pairing of wood and metal that functionalist furniture was built on. The top is 145 cm wide, enough for spread-out papers or two monitors. An auxiliary table that can be set alongside is included. Restored as an original.
The successor of the Slezák works in metal furniture
Kovona emerged after nationalisation from the factory of Robert Slezák in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, which had been among Europe's largest makers of metal furniture since 1908 and which made its name in tubular steel in the 1930s.
After 1948 it continued the same craft under a new name: chrome-plated tubular structures, wooden armrests and upholstery, furniture for homes as well as public interiors. What remained from the pre-war production were the structural principles that keep these pieces in condition decades later.
Since 1992 the company has traded as Kovonax and still makes metal furniture in Bystřice pod Hostýnem.
